Katrina Fulcher-Rood

You’ve already seen Dr. Katrina Fulcher-Rood in my portfolio! She’s a speech language pathologist and the CEO at The Big Picture SLP, which supports speech-language pathologists with science-based, customizable continuing education opportunities. I had the pleasure of designing that website and recently got to work with Katrina again!

When Katrina came to me for her second website project, it was as she was preparing to realize a 20-year dream: opening her own private practice. You know I frikkin’ love helping women bet on themselves. But this one was special.

This project, maybe more than any other to date, gave me the opportunity to see my “why” in action. I started this business because I want to help women bet on themselves. I want to help women answer that “what if?” question and make their dream a reality. Katrina’s project gave me the chance to do that, and the story she shared with me made me cry tears of gratitude. Not even kidding. This was a really special project for me, and I’m so grateful that I’ve gotten to work with and get to know Katrina.

As she did with her original web design project, Katrina worked with Jordana Halpern to prepare the wording for each page of her website.

What a pleasure it was to give Katrina the web presence she deserves!

Kind words

“I have left a review for Kristen in the past. I wanted to share that I wasn't just blowing smoke; I hired her again! It's even in my business plan to put her on a monthly retainer because that's how much I love working with her, and I know her expertise matters in my business’ success.”

The web design process

Katrina already had a strong brand and vision for her private practice website.

She’d worked with a graphic designer in the past, and was prepared with variations on The Big Picture logo and mark. Because her businesses are related under the same brand umbrella, we used her brand’s minimalist, three-color palette and kept the font palette the same.

Katrina also had lovely professional photos that not only showed her off to perfection but also showed her interacting with clients. That’s an important tool for building trust with patients!

As I did with her previous website project, I built Katrina’s private practice website in Squarespace. It’s a no-code builder that lets my clients update their websites on their own without breaking a sweat or muttering naughty words. Glorious! Katrina loves her other Squarespace website and is already comfortable with making edits on her own, so I knew it’d be a win.

One of the best parts about using Squarespace is the platform’s elasticity. Because Katrina’s clients have communication challenges, it was important that her website be as accessible as possible. She chose to work with EqualWeb, and Squarespace made it easy to install the necessary code that would create the accessibility widget.

Now, visitors to her website can choose an accessibility profile that meets their needs! Each accessibility profile will alter the site’s design for people with blindness and color blindness, motor skills disorders, visual impairments, epilepsy, and more.

Katrina’s website also connects to her secure patient portal so patients can log in to interact with her and manage their account. I also had some fun creating a series of custom icons using her brand mark to showcase her values, like providing an LGBTQ+ affirming space.

Take a look at her new website home page!
